Wesco Electrics Fined $43K for Second Electrical Offense

Defective and dangerous electrical work in the Goldfields has led to an East Perth company's second conviction for submitting an inaccurate compliance notice.

Defective and dangerous electrical work in the Goldfields has led to an East Perth company's second conviction for submitting an inaccurate compliance notice.

At Perth Magistrates Court, Wesco Electrics (1966) Pty Ltd (EC1419) was ordered to pay more than $43,000 in fines and costs following prosecution by WA's energy safety regulator, the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety's Building and Energy division.

The court heard a Wesco Electrics employee carried out electrical work at the Norseman home in July 2022.

As the responsible electrical contractor, the company submitted a notice of completion to Horizon Power that declared the electrical work was complete, compliant with applicable legislation and safe based on compulsory checks and tests.

However, an inspection later revealed the electrician had incorrectly earthed the remote metering enclosure, which could have caused an electric shock to anyone who touched it if a fault occurred while the installation was energised.

Wesco Electrics was convicted under the Electricity (Licensing) Regulations 1991 for submitting an inaccurate notice of completion for the non-compliant electrical work. On 18 May 2026, the company was fined $28,500 and ordered to pay costs of $14,827.

In June 2022, Wesco Electrics was fined $25,000 for a similar offence in relation to electrical work in Kalamunda.

WA's Director of Energy Safety, Daniel Kearney, said the earthing error could have caused an electric shock.

"Fortunately, the issue was identified and rectified before anyone was injured," Mr Kearney said.

"Notices of completion are official documents designed to ensure electrical work is safe, compliant and subject to inspection.

"Electrical contractors must not submit a notice unless they are confident it is accurate."
