The AIDS epidemic remains enormous, unfinished business in West and Central Africa. In 2020, there were an estimated 4.7 million people living with HIV across the region and 150 000 AIDS-related deaths. In the same year, 200 000 people became newly infected with HIV and 1.2 million people are still waiting to initiate life-saving HIV medication.
UNAIDS and the Civil Society Institute of HIV and Health in West and Central Africa are organizing a three-day high-level summit from 31 October to 2 November hosted by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall to discuss the gaps in the region's HIV response. Participants at the summit will also explore how to get regional and national responses on track to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030 as part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
