A comprehensive plan to address workforce attraction and retention across the Western Downs has been endorsed by Council, following months of community consultation and collaboration with local businesses and industry.

The Regional Workforce Plan provides a roadmap for tackling the challenges of attracting and developing a strong, skilled and sustainable workforce to drive local industries and support ongoing economic growth.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Andrew Smith said the endorsement was an important milestone in shaping the region's long-term economic prosperity, by training and skilling workers.

"We know that attracting and developing a pipeline of skilled workers is a challenge for many businesses in the Western Downs, and this plan reflects the ideas, feedback and priorities shared by our community and industry stakeholders," Mayor Smith said.

"The Regional Workforce Plan is critical to powering our industries, supporting our communities, and making the most of the opportunities ahead.

"Through this process we've listened carefully to local voices and worked with key stakeholders to design a practical, forward-thinking plan that positions the Western Downs as a place where people want to live, work and invest."

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Andrew Mayor Smith said the three-year plan will guide workforce initiatives and partnerships, ensuring the region is well positioned to meet both current and future labour market need.

"The Regional Workforce Plan sets out practical strategies to strengthen our region, including improving access to trade courses, addressing housing and childcare availability and embracing technology such as artificial intelligence.

"The Regional Workforce Plan was shaped through extensive public consultation, including surveys, workshops and direct engagement with local industry groups and employers.

"The Regional Workforce Plan serves as a foundation for future initiatives to grow the region's workforce capacity.

"This is about working together to ensure our region remains competitive, resilient and future-focused," he said.
