We're investing $2.25 million to help protect wetlands in Australia and the Pacific. This funding will help global conservation efforts.
The new package will continue to support wetland health and resilience through improved data collection, shared information and engagement support. It also gives Pacific youth more chances to get involved in protecting wetlands.
Funding includes:
- $1.3 million for CSIRO to create a Ramsar Wetlands Hub to improve how we monitor and protect sites
- $500,000 for Geoscience Australia to build our National Wetlands Inventory - a key reporting tool for health and condition insights
- $250,000 for Pacific nations to continue implementing the Convention on Wetlands
- $200,000 towards updating the Waterbird Population Estimates database with new migratory bird statistics.
These investments provide holistic support for conservation, restoration and management efforts. These tools bring in the latest science and data to guide smart decisions.
With stronger evidence we can focus action where it's most needed. For example, accurate bird population data helps keeps wetlands safe. It also protects the birds that rely on them. This updated information will contribute to global monitoring and help identify new areas for protection under the convention.
We're also extending Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP) youth wetlands coordinator role for another year. This lets the current coordinator keep building on their work. It also helps more young people across the Pacific get involved.
