What should our new public schools be named?

The Government has begun community consultation on the proposed names for three out of four brand new schools set to open in 2022.

The proposed names are:

New Aldinga Birth to Year 12 school

  • Payinthi Coastal College*
  • Payinthi Southern College
  • Aldinga College B-12

New Angle Vale Birth to Year 12 school

  • Angle Vale & District College B-12
  • Riverbanks College B-12
  • Gawler River College B-12
  • Adelaide Plains College B-12

New Whyalla secondary school

  • Whyalla Secondary College
  • Whyalla Secondary School
  • Spencer Gulf College

*Pronounced 'Bay-in-di', the word Payinthi echoes the meaning 'to seek, look for, examine, be thinking' and has been provided by the Kaurna Warra Pintyanthi at the University of Adelaide.

The proposed names for each school were developed by advisory committees made up of the school's principal, neighbouring school staff and local parents.

All the proposed names hold significant links to their location and surrounding landmarks.

Education Minister John Gardner said that naming each of the new schools was a significant step in connecting the new schools with their community.

"Deciding on a new name is a significant step in forming the identity for these new schools," said Minister Gardner.

"We are confident that contribution from the local community into the names will provide a sense of connection and ownership between the schools and their prospective communities.

"We encourage people located in the communities where these schools will be built to jump online and complete the short survey.

"These three new schools are a significant part of the Marshall Government's record $1.3 billion education build, which is providing a massive jobs boost for South Australia at a crucial time, while delivering a generational upgrade of schools across the state.

"Construction of the new schools is taking shape and these communities can look forward to having access to world-class education facilities from Term 1, 2022."

Consultation on the three new school names is open until Friday 2 October and surveys can be found online via the following:

A process to identify a name for the new high school in Goolwa will begin once a committee has been established later this year.
