Wilful damage and assault police at Townsville

A 22-year-old Garbutt man has been charged following a wilful damage and assault police incident overnight.

At 3.20am it will be alleged a silver Mazda was driving along Riveredge Boulevarde at Oonooba when the occupants of the vehicle noticed a police car and fled.

It will further be alleged the same vehicle returned to the address and one occupant of the vehicle began throwing rocks at the police vehicle.

The vehicle fled again and drove towards oncoming police cars responding to the incident, including a dog squad ute, forcing the police vehicles to take evasive action to avoid being hit.

The Mazda returned again and after police identified the driver and while arresting him, it will be alleged the other occupants of the vehicle threw rocks at the arresting officers and the police vehicle.

One officer received an injury to their hand while another officer was hit in the leg by the projectiles.

The 22-year-old has been charged with serious assault police, burglary and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

He will appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on July 10.

Investigations are ongoing to identify three other people involved and to locate the stolen Mazda.
