The City of Fremantle will be carrying out garden bed and irrigation works on William Street from Tuesday, 17 February 2026, with works expected to take approximately four weeks, finishing in mid-March 2026.
The works form part of the William Street Reimagined Project, which is transforming the street into a greener, cooler and more welcoming civic space through urban rewilding.
To enable the works to be completed safely, temporary changes to traffic access will be in place during the construction period. This will include the temporary closure of nearby car bays, the loading bay and the fire truck parking area during working hours (7am to 5pm).
During these hours, traffic will be redirected into the existing car bay area, with traffic controllers on site to assist pedestrians and vehicles. The loading bay adjacent to the Walyalup Civic Centre building service entrance on William Street will be closed, and all deliveries will be required to use the temporary loading bay on Adelaide Street near the St John's Anglican Church for the duration of the works.
Outside of working hours, when the contractor is not on site, the road and parking bays will return to normal operation.
Pedestrian footpaths will remain open and unaffected, and access to local businesses and buildings, including the Walyalup Civic Centre and Fremantle Town Hall, will remain unchanged throughout the works.
Signage will be installed in the area to notify the community of temporary access changes.
Designed as a working model for reimagining urban streets, the William Street Reimagined Project aims to enhance local biodiversity, support pollinators, encourage urban cooling, slow traffic, improve drainage and create a more vibrant and people friendly civic street.
The City thanks the community for their patience while these improvements are delivered.
The William Street Reimagined project is a community-led urban greening initiative, jointly delivered by the City of Fremantle and FreoDOC Town Team, and funded through the Streets Alive Grant Program ($100,000).
