Construction has finished on the new Woden public transport interchange, the latest milestone in the regeneration of Woden Town Centre, which once operational will help move more than 10,000 Canberrans each day.
The new interchange delivers modern shelters, improved amenities and a future‑proofed design that will make traveling to and from Woden a better experience, combined with the broader renewal of the precinct.
With Woden Valley expected to experience significant population growth over the next 30 years, this new infrastructure cements Woden's role as a key transport hub for decades to come.
The previous 50-year-old interchange was demolished to make way for the Woden CIT Woden Campus, and deliver the vision in the Woden Town Centre Master Plan of creating an east-west pedestrian boulevard, and an on-street bus and light rail ready interchange on Callam Street.
Testing and commissioning works will now begin before the Woden interchange begins operations on April 20.
Lack of safety and access to light was one of the major concerns from the community about the old interchange. The new interchange features better solar access, enhanced lighting, public toilet facilities and drinking fountains.
New trees and landscaping throughout the precinct will contribute to a greener and more welcoming environment across the town centre. Upgraded cycling and pedestrian paths, as well as secure bike and e-scooter storage will make active travel easier than ever and give Canberrans more choice in how they move around the city.
The interchange has been designed to accommodate light rail, with both bus and light rail stops incorporating similar high quality design features to the rest of the light rail network. While planning continues on stage 2B, the light rail stops at Woden have been modified to serve rapid buses in the central platforms in the interim.
The temporary interchange on the Matilda Street carpark will remain in place while services transition to the new facility, after which it will be decommissioned to make way for the Hellenic Club's 'Woden Village' development.
The new Woden interchange will continue to receive Rapid bus services from Tuggeranong and from Belconnen via the City Interchange and Civic, along with local services operating across the Woden Valley, Weston Creek, Molonglo and Tuggeranong.
No bus timing changes are required due to the move between the temporary and new interchange. However, passengers should familiarise themselves with the new platform layout available on Transport Canberra's website, ahead of the interchange opening.
