On Friday 5 December Wollongong City Council will raise the National Flag of Palestine on the Civic Flagpole outside the Council Building on Burelli Street, Wollongong.
This symbolic gesture, requested by members of the local Islamic community, reflects Council's ongoing commitment to peace, inclusion, and respect. The flag will remain flying from 5–8 December 2025 to honour the contributions of our local Islamic community.
This initiative follows a Council resolution on 25 August 2025 , which outlined a series of actions to reaffirm Wollongong's commitment to peace. The resolution encouraged representatives of the local Palestinian community to apply to fly their flag following the Australian Government's recognition of the State of Palestine at the United Nations in September.
Earlier this year, from 19–22 September, Council proudly flew the United Nations flag to mark the International Day of Peace.
The August resolution also reiterated Council's position that Wollongong is a City for Peace and reaffirmed our commitment to the human rights of all people to live with freedom, safety, and self-determination, as outlined in Articles 3, 5 and 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said:
"At the August 2025 meeting, Council resolved to acknowledge the anguish and pain caused by the ongoing conflict in Palestine and Israel to members of our local community."
"Wollongong is a city committed to peace, inclusion and respect. Flying the Palestinian flag is a symbolic gesture that recognises the contributions of our Islamic community and our shared hope for a peaceful future."
