Wollongong Social Services Shift to Local Providers

Seniors' social support groups continue at community centres

From 1 December 2025, local specialist aged care providers Community Gateway and Warrigal will begin delivering Social Support services previously provided by Wollongong City Council.

In May this year, Council elected to transition out of the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) in response to changes to aged care legislation and funding which would impact Council's ability to deliver these services.

Council has worked closely with the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, Community Gateway and Warrigal to ensure a smooth transition of services, with a strong focus on continuity of care for clients.

Lord Mayor of Wollongong, Cr Tania Brown said the decision to make the transition was to ensure that older people living at home continue to get the services they need under the new federal funding model.

"Our priority has been to ensure residents continue receiving high-quality social support services that meet their needs, both now and into the future," said Cr Brown.

"Both Community Gateway and Warrigal are not-for-profit organisations that have a proven track record in at-home aged care and have demonstrated a collaborative, client-focused approach throughout this transition."

Cr Brown also noted a full circle moment with Community Gateway growing from a service auspiced by Wollongong City Council more than 30 years ago.

"Wollongong City Council helped establish Wollongong Community Options Inc over three decades ago to help fill a gap for at-risk older people accessing services in the region. That group evolved into Community Gateway, and it's fitting that they are one of the organisations stepping in to deliver these services."

Social Support service recipients have been kept informed throughout the process, with Council staff providing individual support to minimise any disruption to services.
