Cessnock Council is set to begin work on a $3.99 million rehabilitation of Sandy Creek Road, Quorrobolong, funded under the NSW Government Fixing Local Roads program.
Earlier this year, Sandy Creek Road received $2.37 million under Round 4 of Fixing Local Roads, which added to the $1.62 million received under Round 2 of the program, and has given Council the capacity to complete the 2.7km stretch of the road from Heaton Road to Quorrobolong Road.
Cessnock City Council Mayor Jay Suvaal said the successful funding application will deliver much-needed improvement for road safety in the area.
"The funding for Sandy Creek Road is a major achievement for our Council and for our community," Clr Suvaal said.
"The $3.99 million rehabilitation of Sandy Creek Road will deliver much-needed improvement for road safety in the area, and we are grateful to Transport for NSW for recognising its importance.
"We acknowledge that there have been recent accidents in the area, and this project will help ensure the safety of our residents and visitors. We appreciate the NSW government's commitment to supporting regional development and look forward to working collaboratively to deliver these upgrades and improvements to Sandy Creek Road."
The rehabilitation of the 2.7km section of Sandy Creek Road includes renewal of pavement and wearing surfaces with a granular overlay and asphalt seal to improve lane widths, wearing surface and shoulder stability, rehabilitation of major culverts, upgrades to minor culverts, improvements to surface drainage, installation of safety barriers and delineation.
Fixing Local Roads is designed to help regional and rural councils carry out vital repair work and reduce the maintenance backlog for local roads.
Works on Sandy Creek Road are scheduled to commence in July 2023 and are likely to take approximately 16 weeks pending resources and weather. More information can be found on the project page here.
