A key commitment of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is delivering a stable, productive and collaborative Tasmanian Parliament.
As part of the Tasmanian Government's 100 day plan, work has commenced to amend section 34 of the Constitution Act 1934 and deliver a new Stability Clause.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said that this legislation was about delivering a stable Tasmanian Parliament.
"We have undertaken consultation with Australian and international legal, Parliamentary and constitutional experts and intend to introduce this legislation later in 2024," the Attorney-General said.
"This legislative change would ensure the stability of the Parliament if an elected member ceases to be a Parliamentary Member of the political party for which they were elected.
"Tasmania needs and Tasmanians deserve a strong, stable Parliament, and that is exactly what we are delivering."
