Working for Victoria supports COVID-safe summer in Port Phillip

Additional support will help deliver a COVID-safe summer and assist with recovery efforts.

An additional 50 people will boost Port Phillip's efforts to deliver a COVID-safe summer and assist with recovery efforts under the Victorian Government's Working for Victoria initiative.

The initiative, which matches people who lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic to suitable roles, will see an extra team of summer rangers patrolling beaches across Port Phillip and four officers at South Melbourne Market, assisting traders with e-commerce and click and collect, as well as encouraging visitors to maintain physical distancing.

Mayor Louise Crawford said the funding would be invaluable to reinforce Council's existing summer management strategy.

"As we move toward our COVID-normal, it's important we remain vigilant to protect what we've all worked so hard for. The additional support from the summer rangers will remind our residents and visitors to keep their distance and follow the rules, while the South Melbourne Market officers will continue to assist traders who've done it tough all year," Cr Crawford said.

"Port Phillip has played a leading role from the beginning of the Work for Victoria initiative and we're proud to continue to employ people who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic."

Summer ranger Sofia Enrigue said the role was a welcome challenge after three months of unemployment.

"It's great to be working again, particularly in a role which helps keep the community safe over summer," Ms Enrigue said.

Working for Victoria has funded the roles for a six-month fixed term, with additional programs including a community outreach service to be rolled out in early 2021.

The $500 million Working for Victoria initiative is matching people who have lost their job, including those affected by the economic impacts of COVID-19, with employers who need staff.

Working for Victoria has created more than 11,000 jobs since the initiative was launched in April, providing a quick return to work and access to training where required.
