Moira Shire Council has begun construction works to upgrade a rural connector road near Invergordon, aimed at improving safety.

The $1.08 million project will upgrade a 3.9 kilometre unsealed section of Wunghnu Road, between Labuan Road and Katamatite-Shepparton Road.

The works will transform the road into a wider, sealed surface with enhanced line marking and intersection signage to improve visibility and reduce the risk of accidents.

Construction works began on site this week, after Moira Shire Council appointed local contractor OLEX Civil to carry out the works.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Graeme Emonson PSM said this was a priority project, with the section of road recording past vehicle incidents.

"This is a really important road upgrade, and we are pleased to see construction now underway following a rigorous procurement process," Dr Emonson said.

"We are grateful to the Federal Government for supporting this project through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

"Improving our road network is a key priority for Council, as we know people rely on safe transport networks to connect across our Shire for work, recreation and study."

Traffic detours and intermittent road closures will be in place throughout the construction period. Motorists are advised to follow all traffic management signage and allow extra travel time.

Works are expected to be completed by late June.
