Works Starts On New School Gym

  • Minister for Education

Students in Montrose are a step closer to having the modern, competition-grade gym facilities they deserve, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Education and Member for Monbulk, James Merlino today turned the sod on the $3.82 million gym that is set to open in Term 4 2020.

The competition-grade court will give students the opportunity to enjoy a number of sports including netball, basketball, volleyball and badminton. The gym includes 90 seats for spectators, along with a storeroom and office.

The new gym will support teachers to deliver a 21st-century education, and give students access to great local sports facilities that can be shared with the local community outside of school hours.

H2o Architects designed the project and Switch Co have been appointed to build it.

During the visit, Minister Merlino also recognised the contribution of retiring principal Neil Pollard, who has been at the school for 13 years. Over that period, Mr Pollard has overseen new buildings, new uniforms and managed growth in student numbers.

The school recently received more than $100,000 through the Labor Government’s Maintenance Blitz program to carry out maintenance works, including bushfire preparedness activities.

The Labor Government is investing $6.1 billion to deliver more than 1,400 school upgrades, supporting over 7500 construction jobs for Victorians.

A total of 100 new schools will open by 2026 under the Labor Government’s school building boom, ensuring every child has a great local school and a great start in life.

This building boom will continue over the coming years, with the government delivering 11 new schools across the state due to open in 2020.

As noted by Minister for Education and Member for Monbulk James Merlino

“We are investing record funding in our schools to make Victoria the Education State.”

“Once complete, this top-class gym will inspire students at Montrose Primary School to discover new sports or to take their current sporting skills to the next level.”
