Surf Coast Shire community members are invited to join one of five free professional development workshops this month, aimed at helping creatives to successfully apply for Council's DEVELOP artists and creatives grants which open 1 February.

Surf Coast Shire Council will be offering grants of up to $3,000 for individuals and $5,000 for collectives to support creatives from all artistic disciplines to explore new directions, innovative ideas and bold concepts.

Council is strongly encouraging First Nations artists and artists from diverse groups such as LGBTQIA+ and culturally and linguistically diverse communities to apply. The grant workshops will assist people with the application process.

Surf Coast Shire Councillor Gary Allen said the workshops were an excellent opportunity to learn more about the grant writing process and build confidence to apply for grants as they become available.

"We understand the grant writing process can feel daunting," Cr Allen said. "That's why we are doing everything we can to remove some of the barriers that prevent bold ideas from being born into the Surf Coast community."

"We want to see your great ideas and these workshops have been designed as another step towards helping creative people in our community come out into the open and start making the art they are dreaming of."

Delivered across the shire from 24 to 31 January, and on Zoom, workshop participants have an opportunity to learn how to:

  • understand the aims of a funding body for a particular grant round,
  • measure these aims against an individual project,
  • incorporate them into project planning and development. As well as:
  • what constitutes "merit" "impact" and "viability" in the arts,
  • support documentation and what works, and
  • project plans, costings and budgets.
