World Homeless Day

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

Today, 10 October marks World Homeless Day.

Homelessness is a confronting concept that has the potential to become a reality, at any point, in all of our lives.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, has today stressed the importance of action on this issue.

"Every Tasmanian deserves a roof over their head and today marks an important moment in what is a 365-day, 24/7 effort," Minister Street said.

"Tackling homelessness requires a multi-faceted approach and the Rockliff Liberal Government recognises that every Tasmanian facing homelessness has different needs and desires.

"Through our long-term housing plan, we are working to ensure that every Tasmanian has safe, fit-for-purpose and affordable accommodation.

"We are investing over $38 million annually on Specialist Homelessness Services who provide our most vulnerable with a place to stay while acting as a touchpoint for wrap around services.

"There are currently 19 homeless shelters and three Safe Spaces operating around the State, supporting Tasmanians each and every day.

"Whilst homelessness is something that impacts people from all walks of life, we are focusing intently on those groups considered most at risk.

"We are taking action on crisis and transitional accommodation available specifically for women with nearly fifty units around the State.

"The Family Violence Rapid Rehousing program supports people impacted by family violence with transitional accommodation in the private rental market at subsidised rent.

"As part of this ambitious plan, our Housing Connect model – an Australian first – takes an approach to improve access to housing assistance for those Tasmanians finding themselves at risk of homelessness.

"This $16 million investment tailors personalised support to our most vulnerable, connecting people with vital wrap-around services, strengthening community connections and empowering individuals on their pathway to independent living.

"Our Youth2Independence program is an innovative response to supporting young Tasmanians who may be at risk or already experiencing homelessness, an initiative that I champion with immense pride.

"While all of these important homelessness services and accommodation continues to grow our capability to combat homelessness, we are also progressing our long-term housing plan to boost supply across Tasmania with 10,000 more social and affordable homes by 2032.

"Today is an important day and this Government is throwing our full weight behind stamping out homelessness."
