The NSW Government has secured Doug Aitken at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) and Matisse: Life & Spirit, Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou, Paris at the Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW) for the SIAS in 2020-2021.
Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said the SIAS reinforces NSW's reputation as Australia's cultural leader and the 2020-21 season will be no exception.
"The Sydney International Art Series attracts art and culture lovers from right around the globe and we are delighted with the exhibitions that have been secured for the 11th season," Mr Harwin said.
"Doug Aitken's exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) will be the American artist's first major survey of his artwork in the Southern Hemisphere. Aitken is an acclaimed contemporary artist recognised for his ambitious multi-media practice creating sensory and immersive installations".
"The Art Gallery of NSW's presentation of Matisse: Life & Spirit, Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou, Paris will be Australia's single largest exhibition of the renowned French artist's paintings, drawings, sculptures and cut-outs from France's leading modern art museum, Centre Pompidou."
Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the collaborative initiative continues to go from strength to strength.
"Since its inception in 2010, the Sydney International Art Series has generated over $161 million in overnight visitor expenditure for the State and attracted over 2.3 million attendees, with over 219,000 overnight visitors coming specifically to Sydney to view the exhibitions," Mr Ayres said.
"Securing major events through our tourism and major events agency Destination NSW is a key part of the NSW Government's strategy for continuing to grow visitation to NSW.
"The Sydney International Art Series is a staple event on our State's top-class events calendar and ultimately contributes to our overall goal of tripling overnight visitor expenditure by 2030."
