As they orbit above us in space, satellites are supporting more than 7 billion people down on Earth.
The theme of this year's World Space Week, running from the 4-10 October, is satellites improve life.
We are taking this opportunity to appreciate satellite technology. It provides us incredible benefits and worlds of opportunity.
Here's six ways satellites improve our lives each day:
1. Agriculture
Satellites provide near real-time data for monitoring farms.. Remote sensing satellites provide us with detailed information and rainfall assessments. This allows farmers to better manage their harvest and livestock. Giving us the tastiest Australian produce on our plates.
2. Climate
One of the first things we do in the morning is check the weather forecast. To predict weather, satellites are constantly collecting data on the Earth's:
- temperature
- precipitation
- cloud movement
- wind direction
This makes it easier for us to decide what to wear each morning and whether to go to the beach. Most importantly, understand the likelihood of getting caught in the rain!
3. Urban Living
Scored a reservation at that trendy new restaurant? Gone are the days of the printed directory. Positioning satellites enable us to pinpoint our exact location on our smart phones. This helps us navigate traffic and roadworks to get to our dinner destination on time.
4. Communications
Communicating and connecting with those overseas, interstate or in remote areas has never been so special in recent times. Satellites are used to connect Australians to the internet in the most regional and remote locations. This means no matter where you are, you can remain connected with your friends, family and community.
5. Entertainment
Satellites play a key role in bringing us the entertainment we know and love. This includes radio and television. Satellites keep us up to date with the news and allow us to listen to our favourite radio programs. Because of them, we can watch our favourite TV shows and sporting games from around the globe.
6. Shopping
In this digital age, it's satisfying that we have the option to shop from the couch. Satellites allow you to support your favourite local retailer online. They link the business with your bank in order to make a successful transaction.
Without satellites, the world would be a very different place.
