World's Longest Solar Car Race Kicks Off in Darwin

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is proud to welcome 34 teams from 17 countries to Darwin for the world's longest and most prestigious solar car race, the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.

More than 900 participants from leading universities and schools from Australia, India, Europe, Asia, North America, and beyond will race from Darwin to Adelaide in vehicles they have designed, engineered, and built, powered only by the sun.

Minister for Major Events and Tourism and Hospitality Marie-Clare Boothby said the Challenge was a powerful showcase of innovation and the Northern Territory's ability to host unique events.

"This biennial race puts the Territory at the centre of solar research and engineering excellence, inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers," said Ms Boothby.

"It also delivers for Territorians, drawing hundreds of international visitors, media, and industry to Darwin, providing a significant boost to our tourism sector and highlighting our incredible lifestyle, culture, and natural wonders to the world."

The competition will see teams tackle extreme heat, vast open stretches, and unique terrain in three classes: Toyota Challenger, Cruiser, and Explorer.

Free public events in Darwin in the lead-up to the race included vehicle inspections, design presentations, and final road tests, offering locals and visitors the chance to see the technology up close.

Ms Boothby said the CLP Government's backing of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge reflects its commitment to a year of action, certainty and security for all Territorians.

"We are laser-focused on rebuilding the economy and restoring our unique Territory lifestyle, and events like this play a key role in this commitment, highlighting what makes the NT so great and strengthening our reputation as a hub for innovation and adventure," she said.

Bridgestone World Solar Challenge Event Ambassador Chris Selwood AM said: "Designing and building a solar car capable of travelling 3,000 kilometres, qualifying, and then making it to the start is an incredible achievement for those with dreams of a more sustainable future.

"We wish all participants a safe journey as they chase the sun to Adelaide on this 3,000-kilometre, extreme endurance adventure - a once in a lifetime journey."

The race begins at State Square, Parliament House in Darwin on Sunday 24 August, with the public invited to view the line-up of competition vehicles from 7am before official proceedings begin at 8am.
