Members of the WSU community traveling across the state during the Thanksgiving holiday break are advised by the Washington State Patrol to pay close attention to posted speed limits and be prepared to take some extra time on their way to their destinations.
Failing to do so could bring you face-to-face with troopers conducting emphasis patrols beginning Nov. 21 and running through Dec. 1. Troopers in Spokane, Whitman, Adams, Grant and Kittitas counties will be focused on speeding – including driving too fast for conditions – districted or impaired driving and other collision causing violations during the emphasis patrols.
Motorists traveling to and from WSU Pullman will likely see an increased WSP presence along state Route 26 and U.S. 195 as well as Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass, the law enforcement agency advised. Travelers can find current road and weather conditions for all state highways by going to the Washington State Department of Transportation's website, or by checking its app. WSP public information officers also will be providing information on social media platforms during the emphasis using the hashtag #BeSafeCougs.
Troopers advise those traveling across the state to prepare their vehicles for wintry conditions. Among the items recommended for an emergency kit are water, food, blankets, winter clothing and emergency flairs. Motorists should also ensure all vehicle fluids are topped off and that the battery is in good working order. Good all-season or snow tires as well as tire chains may be required when traveling over mountain passes.
