Wyndham City's first cultural site cleansing for a capital works project was hosted on land that will become the home of a new community centre in Truganina.
Bunurong Elder Uncle Mik Edwards and his son Eric Edwards led Wyndham City Mayor Cr Peter Maynard, Cr Susan McIntyre, Cr Robert Szatkowski, Director of City Life Liana Thompson and guests in a ceremony on Bunurong Country.
The cultural site cleansing recognised and paid respect to traditional Bunurong practices and was an opportunity to honour the importance of connection to land, culture and community.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Peter Maynard said: "This is a meaningful, significant milestone for our City. Wyndham City is deeply committed to developing and nurturing strong partnerships with the Traditional Owners of the lands on which Wyndham is built."
To be located at 1 Everton Road, the new community centre in Truganina will be a safe, warm and enticing place where local people of all ages and backgrounds gather, connect and engage in community.
Construction of the Truganina Community Centre will commence in late 2022 and is due for completion in 2024.
This $18.4 million project is supported by the Victorian Government with $4 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund, $3 million from a Building Blocks Grant and $921,000 from the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.
