Logan MP Linus Power welcomed Education Minister Grace Grace today at the official opening of the Yarrabilba State School.
Yarrabilba State School only opened its doors at the start of the school year and since then, Stage 2 construction had to be accelerated to ensure that the $45 million school was able to meet anticipated enrolment demand for 2019.
Mr Power said the school was located in one of the fastest-growing areas of the state and was thriving with the support of the local community.
"With the delivery of a new secondary school in Yarrabilba – due to open in 2020 – and the opening of the primary school, it shows just how committed this government is to giving Queensland students the best education possible.
"We’re giving local Yarrabilba kids the tools to have a great start in life.
"This government is investing in the future of our schools and delivering the facilities our students and teachers need," Mr Power said.
Minister Grace said that Yarrabilba State School was one of four new schools opened in 2018 as part of the government’s commitment to providing high quality education facilities in the areas that need it most.
"I visited Yarrabilba State School with the Premier on the first day of school this year and to come back now and see what’s changed since then is fantastic.
"Stage One delivered prep classrooms, junior primary classrooms, flexible learning spaces, an administration centre, resource centre, multi-purpose hall, canteen, student and staff amenities, sports and play facilities and bus and car set-down areas.
"The completion of Stage 2 will add 16 additional modern classrooms for senior primary students and two classrooms for special education.
In addition to the school, the Yarrabilba community also has access to the newly-completed $3.96 million Yarrabilba Family and Community Place located adjacent to the school grounds.
"The new community facility will encourage the development of a vibrant, safe and connected community," Ms Grace said.
Yarrabilba State School Principal Lee Harrex said completion of Stage 2 would cap off an incredible year of firsts for the school.
"The surrounding community has really embraced the culture we are cultivating at Yarrabilba State School, and the staff and I are looking forward to another successful year in 2019," said Ms Harrex.
"We are so fortunate that students at Yarrabilba State School have access to new and modern facilities as part of their education."
Ms Grace said the State Government had a proven track record of delivering world class facilities and infrastructure projects for Queensland schools.
"In 2018-19 we are delivering an overall infrastructure investment program across the state valued at more than $923 million," she said.
