YAS award winners riding a high

Wodonga Council is pleased to announce there were two deserving winners of the October YAS award.

The Young Achiever Support Scheme is aimed at assisting young people in their pursuits to participate at a state or national level for activities, events or competitions.

The recipients were William Kennedy and Tori English.

Accepting the award on William's behalf at Monday night's council meeting was William's nanna.

William has been playing soccer for nine years.

He was recently selected to represent the Country NSW State team in the National Titles held earlier this month in Coffs Harbour.

William has been in the representative team for Albury-Wodonga for the past three years.

Last year he attended the National Titles in Sydney as part of the Riverina team.

This year alone, William has participated in not only club soccer but has attended tournaments across NSW and Victoria and has attended three week-long selection camps in Sydney and one in Geelong.

William has also participated in two talent programs, training weekly in Albury and Wangaratta.

The other recipient was Tori who recently represented Victoria in five individual events and one team relay at the School Sport Australia Track and Field Championships.

She brought home four individual gold medals and one silver (missing gold by the narrowest of margins), as well as a silver for her relay.

She also set new School Sport Australia records in all five of her individual events.

In July, she competed in the School Sport Victoria State Cross Country in the 12-year-old girl multiclass event, which she won.

Then in August, she competed in the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships in Wollongong where she won the 12-year-old multiclass girls race.
