Ronald McDonald House Charities South East Queensland (RMHC SEQ) is once again proud to open applications for the Charlie Bell Scholarship, helping young people who've faced illness or injury take their next big step into education or training.
The annual scholarship awards $5,000 grants to young people aged 15-20, who have had their schooling disrupted due to medical challenges and are now preparing to pursue university, TAFE, or vocational studies in 2026.
The funds can be used towards tuition, apprenticeship tools, course supplies, or anything that helps remove barriers to success.
2024 recipient, Erin Formann, knows firsthand how life-changing the support can be. Diagnosed with a rare and complex combination of health conditions and dealing with a personal loss, Erin was unable to attend classes consistently, affecting not only her academic performance but also her social and emotional wellbeing.
Despite these challenges, Erin has never allowed her situation to define her future.
"I was determined to overcome my health obstacles, and it has shaped me into becoming a more empathetic and determined individual," she said.
Driven by a deep desire to make a meaningful difference in people's lives, Erin has set her sights on a career in nursing.
"Thanks to the Charlie Bell Scholarship, I was able to start my Cert III in Pathology, which I'm really enjoying. I've also used the funds to help purchase scrubs."
RMHC SEQ Chief Executive Officer, Emma Thompson said the scholarship continues to be one of the organisation's most meaningful initiatives.
"Every year we meet young people who have overcome extraordinary adversity and are determined to reach their goals," she said.
"The Charlie Bell Scholarship is about giving them the support they need to turn their experiences into motivation, and their dreams into reality."
Applications for the 2025 RMHC Charlie Bell Scholarship are now open and will close on 30 November 2025. Applicants do not need to have stayed at a Ronald McDonald House to be eligible to apply.
