Big ideas, bold thinking and a passion for making a difference were on full display recently as students from Ballina Coast High School and Richmond Christian College presented their Youth Week project ideas to Ballina Shire councillors.

The students showcased an impressive range of innovative concepts designed to address local challenges and improve community wellbeing. Ideas included an underwater drone to monitor waterways and support disaster preparedness, a Clean Clothes Kit initiative for people experiencing homelessness, early career support programs for younger students, and a dedicated youth centre for Ballina.

The presentations formed part of the Youth Week program and provided students with the opportunity to share their ideas directly with local decision-makers, gaining valuable experience in public speaking, project development and civic participation.

Ballina Shire Council Social and Community Development Officer Kiara Williams said the quality of the ideas and the commitment shown by the students was inspiring.

"The students demonstrated incredible creativity, insight and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in their community," Ms Williams said.

"What stood out was not only the strength of the ideas, but the passion behind them. These young people have identified real issues, thought carefully about potential solutions and shown a willingness to take action.

"Programs like this help empower young people to see that their voices matter and that they can play an active role in shaping the future of Ballina Shire."

The presentations also marked the beginning of the next stage of the journey, with students now moving into the Ideas2Life program.

Through mentoring, coaching and practical support, participants will have the opportunity to further develop their concepts and explore ways to bring them to life.

Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said it was encouraging to see so many young people engaging with community issues and thinking creatively about solutions.

"It was a privilege to hear directly from these students and learn about the ideas they are passionate about," Mayor Cadwallader said.

"Our young people bring fresh perspectives, innovative thinking and a strong sense of community. Their ideas demonstrate a genuine commitment to making Ballina Shire an even better place to live.

"Council is proud to support initiatives that encourage youth leadership, participation and innovation."

The Youth Week initiative highlights the important role young people play in shaping the future of the region and provides a platform for the next generation of community leaders, innovators and changemakers.
