Young NSW SES Volunteer Competes in Special Olympics

James Gibbs has been volunteering with the NSW SES Maitland Unit for the last two and a half years and recently returned from representing Australia in Football at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi.

More than 7,000 athletes with an intellectual disability from 170 nations competed across 24 sports in the Special Olympics World Summer Games.

James joined the NSW State Emergency Service as a volunteer while he was still at school.

"He wanted to do something different," NSW SES Maitland Unit Engagement Officer Alex Varley said. "James is a valued field member of the Maitland Unit. He's very busy with training, but he comes out with us to help fix damage done by storms in the Hunter area whenever he can."
