Youth Advocate Safer Workplaces at Expo 2025

In a pioneering initiative, the International Labour Organization (ILO) has brought together young voices to advocate for occupational safety and health (OSH) at EXPO 2025, held in Osaka, Kansai, Japan.

An inaugural "Youth Congress" pitch contest held on 17 July 2025 saw eight teams of students present innovative solutions to promote workers' health and safety. The event drew participants from Japan and beyond and also featured special appearances by renowned Japanese celebrities Yoko Oginome and Aki Mukai.

Mahidol University from Thailand was awarded top prize for its innovative app, designed to protect the rights and safety of delivery drivers. Brigham Young University from the United States and the University of Occupational and Environmental Health Japan also received accolades for their contributions to occupational safety and health.

The winning proposals are set to be implemented by companies, showcasing the tangible impact of youth-led initiatives on workplace safety.

Speaking at the awards, Mahidol University team members Nahataichanok Pathomrojsakul and Sunita Songjaroen expressed the motivation behind their proposal stating, "We chose this theme because delivery drivers face high risks to accidents and health problems under the overwhelming pressure from customer reviews. They often lack insurance and protective measures."

The event was the culmination of a three-year process involving over 200 youth from some 25 universities and institutions in eight countries. Commencing in 2024, participants took part a series of seminars and mentoring sessions to gain insight into workplace safety and health. Participating teams submitted Calls to Action highlighting their ideas to create safer and healthier working environments with eight selected to take part in the final.

"The creativity of proposals and level of commitment by all the young people taking part has been outstanding," said Yuka Ujita, ILO Senior Specialist for Occupational Safety and Health. "Their ideas bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to today's workplace challenges, especially in the context of digital transformation, climate change and the demographic transition. These young voices have to much to offer and must be heard."

The Youth Congress took place as part of the EXPO 2025 Days on Safety, Health & Well-being for All held under the inaugural Global Initiative for Safety, Health and Well-being (GISHW). This landmark event focused on empowering young people to actively participate in the design of safe, healthy and inclusive workplaces in the digital age. Rooted in the ILO's 2022 resolution recognizing a safe and healthy working environment as a Fundamental Principle and Right at Work, the Congress addressed the urgent need to raise awareness and to call for action among young people-who often face greater OSH risks-about their rights and the importance of business and human rights in ensuring decent work.
