Youth Back Inner West Housing Reforms

Inner West Council

Media release

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne

The Inner West has received an avalanche of support from local young people for our Fairer Future plan to fix the housing supply crisis in our community.

Last night's public forum on the plan welcomed the largest ever number of young people to attend a council forum. They spoke passionately in support of more desperately needed homes.

The Fairer Future Plan will deliver tens of thousands more homes to ensure local young people, renters and essential workers can find a home in the community they love.

The plan will be voted on next Tuesday at an extraordinary meeting of the Council.

For years, local young people have been crying out for action on the housing crisis and the feedback we've been getting is that they want us to deliver new homes now.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said:

"It was inspiring to see dozens of young people come to address their elected representatives with impassioned pleas for more homes.

"They know that there is no way to solve the housing crisis without building many more homes for people like them.

"For too long the voices of younger citizens have been ignored in the housing debate and that has resulted in a whole generation of Australians being locked out of home ownership. This must end.

"It is vital that the Inner West Council have the courage of our convictions and vote to endorse our own Fairer Future Plan next week.
