Byron Shire Council's Youth Challenge is underway with the aim of the program to improve youth engagement.
The challenge is a five week program targeting high school students.
It introduces them to Local Government, and gives them a chance to highlight a particular issue that is important to them, and to then work with Council to find a solution.
Simon Richardson, Byron Shire Mayor, said young people are important members of our community who can offer insight to Council on a wide range of issues.
"Our young people are amazing, articulate and talented human beings who have so much enthusiasm for their communities and on issues like the environment," Mayor Richardson said.
"This Youth Challenge not only introduces teenagers to the concept of Local Government, but gives them an opportunity to work with staff and Councillors on issues that affect them and are important to them.
"They will be invited to see democracy in action, including Public Access at a Council meeting where they will have the opportunity to present.
"There will also be the opportunity for them to meet and talk to staff across a range of areas in Council and who knows, they might get some career ideas as well," Mayor Richardson said.
The Youth Challenge is for students from local high schools in years nine and 10.
