Zoning changes to business and industrial areas in New South Wales

The NSW Department of Planning and Environment (the Department) is set to change the zoning of business and industrial areas across the state. Tamworth Regional Council is sharing information with affected businesses to help them through this process.

The reforms involve the changing of business and industrial zones in NSW and replacing these with five employment zones and three supporting zones. Other changes include adding new land use terms and updating other terms.

The changes do not apply to residential or rural zoned properties.

Director – Liveable Communities at Council, Gina Vereker said the changes will affect about 2,000 landowners and business operators in the region.

"The Department of Planning initiated this package of reform back in 2021. The reforms do not impact community members living in rural or residential zones."

"Although these changes are being made by the Department, Council has decided to undertake targeted consultation across the Tamworth region with those members of the community directly affected by these zone changes to ensure that our business /industry owners and operators are aware of the government-led changes."

"In addition to the Department's exhibition material, approximately 2,000 owners and operators of commercial or industrial businesses, or those living or working in a mixed-use zone will receive direct communication from Council.

In most instances the impact of the change may be limited to a change to the name of the zone. However, in some zones the Department is proposing a change to the type of land-uses that are either permissible or prohibited in the affected zones. Despite this, the proposed reform will not affect the continued operation of any existing lawful (approved) business.
