146 Charged in Cairns State Flying Squad Operation

Far North Police supported by the State Flying Squad have charged 146 people with 486 offences following a week-long crime crackdown in Cairns.

Between June 3 and 10, specialist police and local officers from General Duties, the Tactical Crime Squad, Dog Squad, Property Crime Unit, Intelligence and Polair targeted high-risk, youth crime and property offenders in Cairns.

Of the 146 people arrested, 74 adults were charged with 251 offences and 72 youths were charged with 235 offences.

On June 5, police successfully deployed a tyre deflation device on the Bruce Highway at Bellenden Ker, after a motorhome was stolen from a Cairns North property overnight on June 4.

Police located the motorhome on Ellis Road shortly after.

A 35-year-old woman was taken into custody nearby in a separate vehicle, while a man fled into bushland.

Police investigations are continuing to locate him.

The 35-year-old woman was charged with one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

On June 10, police located a 32-year-old man who was wanted on an arrest warrant in relation to several property offences.

It will be alleged when officers tried to arrest him, he resisted arrest and assaulted them.

Three officers received treatment at Cairns Hospital for minor injuries sustained during the incident.

The man was charged with two counts of serious assault police, and one count of serious assault police causing bodily harm.

Detective Acting Inspector Alina Bell said the State Flying Squad is a great addition to the hard work already being done by police in the Far North.

"Our officers continue to target, disrupt and deter those offenders causing harm in our community," Detective Acting Inspector Bell said.

"Our top priority is ensuring the community is, and feels safe, and we are continuing to take a zero-tolerance approach to serious repeat offenders causing harm."

Since April, police have charged 651 people with 2054 offences as part of State Flying Squad deployments to the Far North.
