Southern Road Policing Services conducted a targeted traffic operation this morning on the Tasman Highway approach to the Tasman Bridge, identifying a concerning number of speeding and unsafe driving offences during a one-hour period.
19 offences were detected, including:
- Eighteendrivers exceeding the posted 70 km/h speed limit, with 4 of those travelling more than 20 km/h over the limit.
- One driver crossing a single continuous line.
Sergeant Terry McCulloch said police are disappointed at the level of non‑compliance, with many motorists providing unacceptable excuses such as "I'm late for work," "I'm not from this area," or "I didn't realise."
"These are not valid reasons for speeding as the speed limit is clearly signposted and all road users have a responsibility to drive safely and lawfully," he said.
The operation took place only hours after a double fatality in southern Tasmania, heightening concerns about driver behaviour and community safety on our roads.
Tasmania Police reminds motorists that speeding and unsafe overtaking significantly increase the risk of serious crashes and that enforcement operations will continue across the region. We could be anywhere, at any time.
