  • Building strong, safe and connected communities across the State
  • The McGowan Government's 2021-22 State Budget will provide $20 million to support social housing revitalisation within suburbs of Geraldton, Bunbury and Albany.

This comprises of $9 million for Spalding in Geraldton, $5 million for Withers in Bunbury and

$4 million for Spencer Park in Albany, as well as $2 million for overall planning and detailed scoping.

This investment will deliver refurbishments of older social housing properties to meet growing social housing demand as well as demolition of some properties, to improve access and community connection as well as reduce the density of social housing in these suburbs.

New road connections will also be created to improve community safety, access and connectivity while other roadworks, streetscaping and landscaping will enhance the urban environment and improve public amenity.

Works will be delivered in partnership with local government with overall works programs and timeframes subject to the development of detailed scoping. Demolition to support new road connections will commence shortly in some locations.

This investment follows planning and community consultation by the Department of Communities and local government authorities to develop long-term investment strategies to encourage safe, connected and supported communities for the suburbs of Spalding (Geraldton), Withers (Bunbury) and Spencer Park (Albany).

The $20 million package is part of the McGowan Government's recently announced

$875 million investment in social housing to boost social housing stocks throughout WA.

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

"Since stepping into the role of Minister for Housing, I have heard loud and clear from communities in Geraldton, Bunbury and Albany about the need to revitalise these suburbs.

"This $20 million investment will improve properties, help revitalise these suburbs and make them a more attractive place to live.

"This reflects the McGowan Government's commitment to develop affordable, social housing where people feel safe, secure and a part of a thriving local community."

As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

"Our Government is committed to ensuring Western Australia's regions are equipped with modern amenities and facilities that maintain and attract residents and businesses.

"Geraldton, Bunbury and Albany are key regional centres that support surrounding districts, communities and a diverse range of enterprises.

"This revitalisation program is an investment in the future capability and capacity of the Mid-West, South-West and Great Southern, which will enable regional communities and economies to grow and thrive."
