2020 MySchool Data Shows Improvements in NAPLAN

Thirteen Territory schools have been recognised for improvement in NAPLAN testing, following the release of today's 2020 MySchool data.

The national data, based on 2019 NAPLAN testing in years 3, 5, 7 and 9, was published early this morning.

For the first time, this year's data uses a colour coding method, which compares schools to a de-identified population of statistically similar students, rather than statistically similar schools, as done in previous years.

The new Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) methodology provides a fairer comparison for schools, as it draws from students with similar socio-economic background nationally.

For NT school results, this has meant that 40 per cent of NT student achievements are on par with similar students nationally.

There is also a new progress measure, comparing two year gains in achievement to similar students nationally.

Thirteen Territory schools, including two in remote communities, have demonstrated progress, achieving above similar students with the same starting score. They are:

  • Maningrida College: Year 5-7 Reading
  • Milingimbi School: Year 5-7 Numeracy
  • Alawa Primary School: Year 3-5 Reading and Writing
  • Bakewell Primary School: Year 3-5 Writing
  • Larrakeyah Primary School: Year 3-5 Writing
  • Essington International School: Year 3-5 Numeracy
  • Dripstone Middle School: Year 7-9 Reading
  • Sanderson Middle School: Year 7-9 Reading
  • Taminmin College: Year 7-9 Reading
  • Bakewell Primary School: Year 3-5 Reading and Numeracy
  • Gray Primary School: Year 3-5 Writing
  • Nakara Primary School: Year 3-5 Writing
  • Stuart Park Primary: Year 3-5 Numeracy
  • Essington International School: Year 7-9 Reading
  • Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College: Year 5-7 Numeracy

Approximately 13,500 NT students sat NAPLAN in 2019, and were tested across the five domains of reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy.

As noted by Minister for Education, Selena Uibo.

"Unlike the CLP, who ripped $135 million from our schools and sacked teachers, the Territory Labor Government is investing in education so the Northern Territory can have the most improved education system in Australia.

"I would like to congratulate the 13 schools who achieved outstanding improvement in last year's NAPLAN testing, who are leading the way for our other schools.

"In the NT, our student context is markedly different from students in the rest of Australia. One in five come from extreme socio-economic disadvantage, compared to one in 10 nationally and for almost 40 per cent of our students, English is not their first language.

"This new methodology enables us to compare students in a much more equitable way.

"The Territory Labor Government has made it a priority to reinvest in our children. We have delivered successive record education budgets over the past three years and are delivering on our promise to reinstate the teaching positions cut by the CLP.

"We acknowledge there is still a lot of work still to be done, however these pleasing 2019 NAPLAN results show that investment is yielding results."
