2021 Mahla Pearlman Australian Young Environmental Lawyer of Year

The Law Council of Australia is pleased to announce the 2021 Mahla Pearlman Australian Young Environmental Lawyer of the Year has been awarded to Jess Hamdorf.

Ms Hamdorf is an Associate at Glen McLeod Legal, a leading planning and environmental law practice based in Perth, Western Australia.

Law Council President, Dr Jacoba Brasch QC, said "this year's award recognises the unassuming but vitally effective role that Ms Hamdorf has played over many years, in the National Environmental Law Association (NELA), both at the national and local level.

Ms Hamdorf has also displayed a sustained commitment to the Murdoch University Law School, preparing and presenting course materials in environment law, and being a tutor for the last five years."

Ms Robyn Glindemann, Chair of the Australian Environment and Planning Law Group, said "the commitment of people like Ms Hamdorf, who volunteer their time so generously over many years all while managing their own practice and the needs of their law firm clients, allows organisations like NELA to flourish thus benefitting the profession as a whole."

The Mahla Pearlman Award is named in honour of the former Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales, and former President of the Law Council of Australia, the late honourable Mahla Pearlman AO.

The recipient is a young lawyer who has made a significant contribution to environmental law and to the legal and wider community. The award is conducted annually by the Australian Environment and Planning Law Group of the Law Council's Legal Practice Section.
