38th Universal Periodic Review of human rights UK statement on Singapore

The United Kingdom commends Singapore's ratification of the CERD and efforts to improve women's rights. As with all countries, we continue to urge a moratorium on executions as the first step towards abolition, and the removal of judicial corporal punishment and detention without trial.

We recommend Singapore:

  1. Adopt further legislation against Modern Slavery, including reporting provisions for corporations, ensuring recruitment fee caps are enforced, greater flexibility to move between employers and statutory hours of rest and leave for foreign domestic workers;

  2. Adopt an open, merit-based process when selecting national candidates for UN Treaty Body elections;

  3. Implement comprehensive legislation protecting people from discrimination on the basis of age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, race, religion or belief.

Thank you.
