40 New Constables Join Queensland Police Force

Forty new First Year Constables (FYCs) are embarking on their challenging and rewarding policing careers, after graduating at the Oxley Police Academy this week.

There are currently a record number of 582 recruits currently training at the Academy, with a further 1691 applicants in the recruitment pipeline.

Amongst the graduating cohort was FYC Chante Mare, who was inspired to join the QPS after becoming a mother and seeking a career that would allow her to positively contribute to the community.

"Growing up in a high crime area, I know the distress the community can feel," she said.

"If I can play a small part in creating change, then I'll do that."

FYC Chante Mare was also awarded the Community Achievement Award, after completing an outstanding 90 hours of community service while training at the Academy.

"Training at the Academy was extremely beneficial for my self-confidence, fostering long lasting relationships with the recruits as we learnt the fundamental skills of policing alongside each other," she said.

The new FYCs were officially inducted by Deputy Commissioner Cameron Harsley, Assistant Commissioner Mark Kelly and Member for Mount Ommaney Jess Pugh as the final cohort to enter the Service for this calendar year.

Deputy Commissioner Harsley congratulated the 40 new FYCs for their dedication to training and protecting Queenslanders all across the state.

"It is an honour to be here today to congratulate the FYCs on their hard work and dedication to training over the past eight months," she said.

"I commend each of them for choosing this path and dedicating themselves to their fellow Queenslanders."

"It is an honour to acknowledge our First Year Constables for their successful completion of Academy training," he said.

"As they enter into the First Year Constable program, I hope they seize every moment, learn from their colleagues, and immerse themselves in the community.

"Throughout their career in the QPS, they will encounter many challenges and hardships. Yet, amidst these trials, I am confident they will find satisfaction in aiding those in need and forging relationships that will last a lifetime.

"I have no doubt that their unique backgrounds and experiences, alongside their newly acquired skills, will contribute to making them invaluable officers."

The new FYCs will commence their station-based training over the next 12 months, being deployed across the Far North to Southeast Coast and Central Queensland.

The recruits bring with them, a wealth of expertise and skills from not only varying previous careers such as teaching, defence, project management and corrections, but also from their many backgrounds.

Coming from diverse professional backgrounds, this cohort brings valuable skills and experiences from industries within and outside Australia which will prove incredibly useful in their careers as Queensland Police officers.

This graduating squad is the second to graduate following the launch of the QPS' largest recruitment campaign 'Challenging. Rewarding. Policing.', which is promoting a range of new incentives for people to join.
