New exercise stations, suburban shopping village beautification, lighting upgrades and improved sporting infrastructure are among a range of new community projects that City of Darwin will start to deliver over the coming months to improve the amenity of Darwin suburbs.
Council is investing $5 Million towards the Better Suburbs Projects program to upgrade streetscapes and community infrastructure in our suburbs as part of Council's commitment to achieve a vision of a "City of Colour".
This commitment follows on from the $2.13 million already invested jointly by City of Darwin and the Northern Territory Government in 2020, as part of the COVID-19 stimulus package.
Through consultation with the Alderman, council officers have identified key areas around the municipality that require an upgrade, new assets or equipment.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the Better Suburbs Projects would also help stimulate the economy with works going out to support local contractors.
"Tenders have closed today for one of the projects to demolish and deliver a new public toilet block and a fixed basketball court shade structure at Chrisp Street Oval which will see more than $300,000 injected into the Darwin economy for that project alone," Mr Vatskalis said.
The Better Suburbs Projects have been broken down into around 20 projects with $750,000 allocated to each ward and another $2 Million for street beautification including works at Malak, Karama and Parap shopping villages.
