50 arrested in one-night transport network sweep, NSW

Fifty people, including a man wanted on multiple fraud and theft offences, were arrested during a one night operation targeting the rail corridor and public transport network.

Operation Colossus is a Police Transport Command (PTC) intelligence driven operation targeting hot spots along the rail corridor. The operation focuses on offences such as alcohol/drug related crime, anti-social behaviour and graffiti/malicious damage offences.

Police Transport Command Commander South West Sector Acting Superintendent Mick Rochester said the operation (Friday 1 March 2019) aimed to reduce the fear of crime on the public transport network.

"The Police Transport Command remains committed to ensuring staff are deployed to the right places at the right times to reduce crime on the public transport network," Acting Superintendent Rochester said.

"The arrests were made for offences such as the possession and supply of prohibited drugs, knives/weapons and stolen property, break and enter, affray, fraud, outstanding warrants, breach bail, resist/hinder, offensive, trespass and traffic offences."

Of note was the arrest of a 36-year-old man who was charged with 20 offences. When He was arrested, the man was found to be in possession of a stolen credit card and wanted for multiple steal from motor vehicle.

The 36-year-old was arrested prior to his appearance at Parramatta Bail Court yesterday. There, he was formally refused bail and taken for assessment.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested at Caringbah Railway Station after he was seen trying to avoid police. He was later found with a quantity of prohibited drugs believed to be ecstasy. He was charged with drug supply and granted conditional bail to appear at Sutherland Children's Court on 10 April 2019.

"The operation was not only effective in statistics, it provided the opportunity to engage and interact with a large cross-section of the commuting public and was very well received by members of the community."

Similar operations are planned to take place on the public transport network throughout the year.
