Got a community project or idea that needs some funding? Council's Community Initiatives and Creative Public Spaces Grants are now open - offering $5,000 grants to eligible community groups, individuals and creatives.
Byron Shire Mayor Sarah Ndiaye said the purpose of Council's ongoing investment in the two funding programs was to deliver small grants that could make a big difference to community groups and creatives.
"In particular, we are actively looking to support projects from a diverse range of ages, cultures and abilities that look for new ways to activate our public spaces and contribute to community," the Mayor said.
The Creative Public Spaces Program is designed to enable makers and artists of the Northern Rivers to activate public spaces across the Byron Shire with creative interventions across all art forms.
Projects from last year's grant round (2025-26) included the delivery of pop-up performance Hoppers on the sandbar at Brunswick Heads in January to large crowds, and The Wondertrail - on now until 1st June - an interactive self-led adventure for children that brings the rainforest alive in Mullumbimby's Heritage Park.
"Last year's Community Initiatives Grants supported a range of innovative projects including training community volunteers to safely transport injured and orphaned wildlife and a disability-led dance program. Many of these grass roots programs have been running successfully for years now and have been proven to help make inspiring projects happen in our community," the Mayor said.
"We encourage applications for any event or project that supports the environment, the creative life of the community or that improves access and inclusion and opens up ways for more people to participate in our community," she said.
