600 skilled workers to join Territory's construction industry

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government and Master Builders are partnering to bring 600 skilled overseas workers into the Territory in the coming months to help drive its booming construction sector.

The Government is also throwing its support behind Master Builders 'Born to Build' program which sets a target of growing the NT construction sector by 5000 workers.

Under the plan to attract 600 new skilled workers, the NT Government will provide $200,000 to Master Builders and a consortium of construction companies to lead three expos in Philippines and India from next week. These countries are being targeted because of their strong pool of skilled workers.

Leading a consortium with the Minerals Council of Australia and the Chamber of Commerce, Master Builders NT will join the delegations. Suitable workers will be encouraged to sign up to come to the Territory and work in the domestic sector, as well as commercial and other projects.

The Flexible Workforce Solutions Fund is a key initiative under the Territory Labor Government's $12.8 million workforce boost package.

Grants of up to $200,000 are available on a 25:75 co-contribution basis for projects and activities.

The Government is today also supporting the launch of Master Builders' 'Born to Build' program and will work closely with it and the construction industry on a number of shared initiatives including;

· Scaling up pathways for construction workers to become trainers for other construction workers;

· Making more short courses available to upskill the sector for future growth,;

· Working together to attract skilled overseas workers, and;

· Promoting trades as an attractive career path for school students and school leavers
