61 new police officers graduate today

Northern Territory Police will welcome 51 new Constables from Recruit Squad 142, and 10 Aboriginal Community Police Officers into the police force today.

During their six-month course, Recruit Constable Squad 142 completed units in defensive tactics, driver training, search and rescue and firearms. The course also included legislative training, cultural awareness and engagement and addressing domestic and family violence.

The diverse group of graduates were recruited from all across Australia, 14 from the Northern Territory and 37 from interstate.

The new constables will be taking up duties primarily in Alice Springs and Katherine, with postings also to include Tennant Creek, Borroloola, Nhulunbuy, Yuendumu and Papunya.

The Aboriginal Community Police Officer (ACPO) Squad 27 members will be posted to Alice Springs, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Nhulunbuy. The ACPOs have undertaken 23 weeks of training and today also join the ranks of sworn police officers.

Commissioner Jamie Chalker APM said it was a proud day to welcome such a large number of recruits into the Northern Territory policing family.

"These recruits have made the admirable commitment to protect and serve our community. The college staff have done fantastic work in developing the recruits' skillsets, and I am eager to watch their careers progress."

The graduation will be live streamed on the NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services Facebook page at 5.00pm today.
