A word from our Youth Ambassador, Rachael

Youth Ambassador, Rachael Lee.

My time working as a Youth Ambassador at council has been an incredible experience where I have learnt a lot about myself, other young people, and my local community.

I have been involved in a range of projects and events that have enabled me to work closely with young people in the community, which is something that I have always been passionate about.

One of the main projects I have been involved in, and one of my favourite parts about my role, is the Valley Youth Space, a drop in, afterschool youth space in Yarra Junction for high school aged students.

For more than a year the Valley Youth Space has given young people a space to unwind and socialise in a welcoming and safe environment, and participate in fun activities such as art, gaming, table tennis, hip-hop and cooking.

Being involved in meeting the needs of young people in this way has been rewarding for me, as this is something that, growing up in this area, I always thought was really lacking.

I have gained so many new skills from this role, and have developed my confidence in talking to new people, presenting in front of groups, representing other young people, and taking on new challenges and opportunities.

I have also gained an important insight into how passionate young people really are about issues that are important to them and that impact their lives now and in the future.

For any young people that are interested in sharing their voice and making a difference in the community, I encourage you to keep an eye out for the next Youth Ambassador recruitment in 2020.
