ABC to establish pop-up newsroom in Liverpool

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller has welcomed the Australian Broadcasting Corporation to Liverpool after the national broadcaster confirmed it will operate a pop-up newsroom in the city for one month.

Mayor Waller also welcomed the announcement that ABC Radio Sydney's number one Drive host Richard Glover will broadcast live his weekly comedy show Thank God It's Friday! from the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre from 5pm on Friday, 26 March.

Cassie McCullagh's morning program Focus will broadcast from Liverpool City Library during the Easter holidays on soon to be released dates.

"The ABC is a national treasure and much more and I would like to officially welcome them to Liverpool," Mayor Waller said.

"The ABC is not only a credible source of news, but it's also about community. This pop-up newsroom in Liverpool will add texture to the ABC's coverage of western Sydney and put Liverpool and the South West in the frame.

"The ABC are going to uncover some great stories in Liverpool. Reporters will be gathering news here day in day out. They will better understand what we already know – Liverpool is a wonderful community of diverse backgrounds, viewpoints and experience.

"We're a city with a heart and a history."

ABC Radio Sydney Manager Mel Withnall said the ABC had a long and rich history of local news coverage in South West Sydney. "We are always looking at ways to better serve our outer suburban audiences."

ABC NSW News Editor Mark Davies said: "We've already tripled our news team dedicated to covering West and South West Sydney and this initiative will further build on that work.

"The connections and contacts we make in the next four weeks will further strengthen our ability to report on the topics and issues that are important to local communities."

ABC reporters will operate out of a central operations room full-time from 22 March – 16 April. The room is being provided by Council.

The ABC's primary purpose in Liverpool is to gather news, develop local stories and voices and deepen their engagement with the local community.
