Australian men are increasingly looking to community pharmacies for accessible healthcare, as new research highlights growing frustration with GP wait times and strong support for extended pharmacy hours.
According to independent research by Insightfully, one in six Australians (16%) now wait more than three weeks for a GP appointment—up three points in just 12 months. Pharmacy Guild of Australia National President Professor Trent Twomey said the findings show the need to rethink how healthcare is delivered.
The survey found:
- 87% of men support pharmacies opening 6am–midnight, and 79% back 24-hour access
- 56% of men aged 18–34 would pay for an immediate pharmacist consultation for everyday or long-term health conditions
- 30% of men said that GP wait times were 'unacceptable'
- 37% of men aged 18-34 said they were unable see their regular GP
- And 30% of men aged 18-34 said they had been forced to visit an emergency department for themselves or someone they care for because they couldn't get a GP appointment
"Men don't need more motivation to see their GP—they need access. Community pharmacy can help with more accessible care, easier access, and trusted advice," Professor Twomey said.
Community pharmacies are Australia's most accessible primary healthcare providers, open extended hours and weekends—when other options are closed.
"These are hours that match the reality of shift work, FIFO schedules, and modern life. The research shows men are willing to pay to access care when they need it."
Pharmacists are now expanding the services they offer, including treatment for common conditions, vaccinations, and health checks.
Trust in pharmacists remains strong, with 82% of Australians saying the trust the advice and treatment they receive in pharmacy.
Professor Twomey urged patients to "think pharmacy first" for everyday health needs.
