ACT Greens welcome support for international students and temporary visa holders affected by COVID-19

Australian Greens

The ACT Greens today welcomed a commitment from the ACT Government to provide financial support for international students and temporary visa holders affected by COVID-19.

The news follows calls in recent days from Mainul Haque, the ACT Greens' multicultural affairs spokesperson and candidate for Yerrabi, and former president of the Canberra Muslim Community Inc, Gungahlin Mosque and Bangladesh Australia Association Canberra, for support of international students and temporary visa holders during this unprecented crisis.

"The Federal Government's decision to exclude nearly 1 million international students and temporary visa holders from the otherwise commendable stimulus package is unjust. Coronavirus does not discriminate - nor should our governments," Mr Haque said today.

"Members of our Canberra community should also not be denied much-needed support because they lack a particular passport.

"This is an important step in the right direction for the ACT Government. International students and temporary visa holders bring immense socio-economic benefits to our local community and economy, and will no doubt welcome this support at what so far proved to be an exceptionally challenging time."

Media alert: Mr Haque will be made available for an interview today on request.
