ACT Parents Demands Action On School Resourcing

ACT Parents the peak body representing over 60,000 ACT public school parents and carers has launched a territory-wide survey calling on parents and carers to share their experiences and priorities as our public schools face growing strain.

Rising costs, staffing shortages and increasing student need have pushed the ACT public education system to a breaking point. Schools are projected to overspend by almost $70 million this year, a clear sign that the current resourcing model is no longer keeping pace with what schools are expected to deliver.

The ACT Government's Public School System Resourcing Review is now underway, and ACT Parents says families must have a central role in shaping the solutions.

"We hear from parents and carers who are deeply supportive of their schools but can see they are stretched thin," ACT Parents Executive Officer Veronica Elliott said. "Teachers are doing everything they can, but the system around them isn't keeping up. We need to ensure public schools are funded to deliver the things we all expect of them, and that means listening to families."

The survey includes a simple five-minute set of core questions, followed by an optional detailed section for families who want to share more. Responses will directly inform ACT Parents' submission to the expert Review Panel.

"This is a chance to be part of fixing the system," Ms Elliott said. "If we want a strong public education system that meets the needs of every child, we need to understand what matters most to families and what supports schools need to get there."

Ms Elliott said the survey is an important opportunity for parents to highlight the practical issues affecting learning, from having a qualified teacher in every classroom, access to learning support, behaviour and wellbeing services, specialist staff and having accessible and fit-for-purpose facilities.

"Right now, many parents are seeing the impact of shortages and rising need in real time. Their insights are critical to ensuring the Review Panel has a clear picture of what is happening on the ground and what must change."

ACT Parents is encouraging all families in ACT public schools to participate.

"Whether you have two minutes or ten, your voice can help ensure ACT public schools receive the resources and support they need to do the work we all rely on them for," Ms Elliott said.
