Active Ageing: new gym and aqua classes for over 50s

The Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre is running a new series of aqua and gym-based fitness classes specifically for people over 50.

The Staying Active classes are now running every Monday, with the aqua aerobics class held at 7.30am and the group fitness class at 11am.

Oasis Programs Supervisor Lauren Gaynor said the classes were a terrific way for over 50s to start their fitness journey, be supported by enthusiastic staff, and make new friends.

“As we age, it becomes increasingly important to keep on top of our health by staying active,” Ms Gaynor said.

“Regular exercise helps you build muscle mass, helps with your strength and balance, and keeps you fit and mobile.

“It doesn’t really matter what level of fitness you’re currently at or if you have pre-existing injuries; our staff will be able to adapt the workout to suit what you’re comfortable with.

“The classes are held in a big space, and the class sizes are capped, so there’s plenty of room to socially distance as well.”

The Staying Active classes are also proving to be a social activity for participants.

“Exercising in a group environment is a lot of fun and many of our class groups go out for coffee later,” Ms Gaynor said.

“We’re actually having a two for the price of one offer for our Monday 11am gym class which will run until the 27 June, so it’s a perfect opportunity to bring a friend and have a giggle together as you do the workout.”
