Released today, the latest Tasmanian Agri Food ScoreCard shows 2023-24 was another strong year for Tasmanian agriculture, despite dry and challenging seasonal conditions.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said our Liberal Government is delivering for Tasmanians, backing in an industry that puts food on our tables, keeps people employed, and boosts our economy.
"We're a farming State through and through, and I'm incredibly proud of the ongoing resilience we've seen across the sector", Minister Pearce said.
"Our Government stepped up to support our primary producers as they navigated tough drought conditions in 2023-24, and it is clear our partnership has delivered positively for the industry.
"The latest ScoreCard highlights the outstanding performance of our agri food sector, which continues to capitalise on the State's advantages in climate, soils, biosecurity, natural resources and irrigation.
"It demonstrates strong progress toward our Government's goal of growing the State's annual farm gate value to $10 billion by 2050, reinforcing agriculture as the backbone of Tasmania's economy and way of life.
"Our wine sector had an outstanding year, with a 48 per cent increase in farm-gate value to $62 million, driven by higher yields, strong prices, and an excellent vintage.
"Dairy continues as the State's highest value land-based agricultural industry, contributing $678 million in farm gate value, which was closely followed by meat production, with a farm gate value of $667 million.
"The fruit sector experienced a significant recovery, with farm gate value rising to $401 million, reflecting improved data quality, favourable production, and strong performance in berries and cherries.
"The vegetable sector delivered another outstanding year, with farm gate value reaching $630 million."
